Get PriceSpain operates various energy storage systems, with pumped hydroelectric storage being the most prevalent. This system utilizes gravitational potential energy by pumping water
Get PriceDue to the large capacity of installed hydroelectric and thermal storage systems and the resilience of the Spanish power grid, the need for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Spain has been relatively low. The lack of a clear regulatory framework for BESS has also hindered its development in Spain so far.
When it comes to installed energy storage capacity in general, Spain is one of the leading countries within Europe (see figure 2). Currently, Spain has 6.3GW of hydroelectric and 1GW of thermal storage capacity installed. In fact, the non-BESS storage capacity in Spain is higher than in any other European country.
Spain currently has 18 pumped-storage hydroelectric power plants with an installed capacity of 6 GW. What is a pumping station? Pumped-storage power plants have two water reservoirs at different heights. During off-peak hours, water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir.
This reversible pumped-storage power plant in Spain will have an installed capacity of 440 MW, allowing reversible energy storage of 16 million kWh, equivalent to the average daily consumption of more than 4 million people, and providing a firmness to the electricity system of up to 37 hours with the machines at full load.
La Jose Maria de Oriol hydroelectric power station, known as Alcántara, is also among the largest in Spain. Located in the province of Cáceres, Extremadura, it has an installed capacity of 916 MW distributed in four groups of 229 MW each.
There are also non-renewable power plants within the electricity system (which use fossil fuels to produce energy). In Spain, electricity generation is regulated by the State, but it is liberalised, which means that any person or company can generate electricity, feed it into the grid and sell it.
The global commercial and industrial solar energy storage battery market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with demand increasing by over 400% in the past three years. Large-scale battery storage solutions now account for approximately 45% of all new commercial solar installations worldwide.
