Get PriceThis research aims to further study the impact of electricity generation from wind and solar PV power on the mean and variance of the wholesale electricity price in Portugal.
Get PriceStarting January 2025, electricity price in Portugal increased by 2.1%, as reported by Idealista. This rise is linked to inflation and adjustments in energy production costs.Currently, residential electricity prices range from €0.20 to €0.25 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), depending on consumption levels and providers.
This research intends to reveal how the Portuguese wholesale electricity price is responding (positively or negatively) to the rapid deployment of wind and solar PV in recent years. The main results of this research highlight the MOE from wind power, as well as the leverage effect on the wholesale electricity price.
This dependency makes prices vulnerable to global energy market fluctuations. Portuguese electricity bills include various fees, such as VAT (6% for basic tariffs) and network maintenance costs. These additional charges significantly impact the final price paid by consumers. Curious about solar panels?
Broadly speaking, Portugal is one of the leading countries in raising the installed capacity of both wind and solar PV power (cf. Fig. 2). However, as noted earlier, the country's current energy policies may still be insufficient to enhance competitiveness, mainly due to long-term guaranteed prices.
The electricity system in Portugal is also managed by long-term state-wide contracts namely: Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and Contractual Equilibrium Maintenance Costs (Custos de Manutenção do Equílibrio Contratual - CMEC).
On July 1, 2007, the Portuguese electricity system was integrated with the Spanish system, creating the MIBEL electricity market. There is a high degree of convergence between the prices in both zones. Since 2014, every year electricity prices in Spain and Portugal have coincided in more than 90% of the hours.
The global commercial and industrial solar energy storage battery market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with demand increasing by over 400% in the past three years. Large-scale battery storage solutions now account for approximately 45% of all new commercial solar installations worldwide. North America leads with a 42% market share, driven by corporate sustainability goals and federal investment tax credits that reduce total system costs by 30-35%. Europe follows with a 35% market share, where standardized industrial storage designs have cut installation timelines by 60% compared to custom solutions. Asia-Pacific represents the fastest-growing region at a 50% CAGR, with manufacturing innovations reducing system prices by 20% annually. Emerging markets are adopting commercial storage for peak shaving and energy cost reduction, with typical payback periods of 3-6 years. Modern industrial installations now feature integrated systems with 50kWh to multi-megawatt capacity at costs below $500/kWh for complete energy solutions.
Technological advancements are dramatically improving solar energy storage battery performance while reducing costs for commercial applications. Next-generation battery management systems maintain optimal performance with 50% less energy loss, extending battery lifespan to 20+ years.
