The systematic development of four types of solar concentrating systems, namely parabolic trough, power tower, parabolic dish and double concentration, has led to their increasing efficiency in converting concentrated solar thermal energy into process heat, chemical fuels and electricity in a conventional steam turbine [2, 3].
However, electrical output drops dramatically if the sun is not focused on the cell, or if clouds block the sun. A concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) system comprises of a solar concentrator using lenses (Figure 2), or mirrors (Figure 3), a tracking mechanism, solar cells, and a heat sink.
The active solar system requires machinery and electrical equipment (i.e., pumps or fans) to convert solar to heat and electricity.
